Lesvos is an amazing place it is a 'birders' dream island especially during Spring Peak Migration at the end of April and the beginning of May. This colourful Aegean gem produces stunning birds in an intricately woven web of habitats, you will be amazed by the sheer number of species packed into this tiny island jewel. This is an ideal time to see the more colourful arrivals such as European Bee-eaters, European Rollers, Eurasian Hoopoes, European Golden Orioles and Rufous Bush Robins.

A male Red-breatsed Flycatcher - a regular on Lesvos, this 2024 bird was photographed in the Meladia Valley

Wth direct flights form London you can be out enjoying the beautiful landscapes, in lovely sunshine, within hours of getting out of bed! Some of the most delighful birds will be encountered as we explore the mosaic of habitats ranging from shore-line marshes to mountainside forest.

Icterine Warbler is often seen on this trip - also taken in the Meladia Valley

Red-throated Pipit - one of my favourites - taken in the fields of the Alykes Wetlands

Spur-winged Plover (Lapwing) - this uncommon visitor is now a regular and has probably bred in recent years

this small inland Pool attracts many species and is a great spot in wihch to look for Crakes. Three species can be found there: Little, Spotted & Baillon's Crakes.

a female Little Crake photographed in 2025 along the Tsiknias River

The Lesser Grey Shrike is the most uncommon of the four species of shrike regularly found on Lesvos. the others being: Woodchat, Red-backed and Masked Shrikes.

one of the most colourful birds seen passing through Lesvos is the European Roller. It competes with the Eurasian Hoopoe, European Bee-eater and European Golden Oriole for our attention.

there are many pairs of Little Owls on Lesvos but are decreasing in numbers just like the population in the UK!

Long-eared Owls breed in Skala Kalloni and the adjacent villages and are sometimes exceedingly obliging

The Scops Owl is also a local breeding species - I took this picture from my hotel balcony this year - 2025

rugged hillsides are the home of Rock Nuthatches, Blue Rock Thrushes, Cretzschmar's Bunting, Black-eared Wheatears and several other species

Butterflies abound on Lesvos - the prolific wild flowers attract many species, there are over 50 species to look for. We usually see 20-30. A Swallowtail is shown. Over 40 species of Dragonflies can also be seen, if the weather conditions are perfect some of the Damselflies have population explosions and literally millions can be seen.

Dark Spreadwings mating, seen in their thousands in 2025.

Many species of waders pass through the island including one or two uncommon species. This is a Marsh Sandpiper and below is a Temminck's Stint

here is one of my groups in 2024 are waiting patiently (and quietly) for the appearance of one of the island's most sought after species - Kruper's Nuthatch.

and there it is, a fantastic addition to your island list, KRUPER'S NUTHATCH. Other most sought after species are: Cinereous Bunting, Cretzschmar's Bunting, Western Rock Nuthatch, Rufous-tailed Bush or Scrub Robin, River Warbler, Citrine Wagtail, Broad-billed and Terek Sandpipers, Eleanora's Falcon and Levant Sparrowhawk.

Masked Shrike, a localised summer breeder, a real beauty!

Starred Agama can be seen all over island on suitable rocky habitat

European Pond Terrapin and Striped-necked Terrapins can be found in many areas as well as Spur-thighed Tortoises.

The Olive-tree Warbler is huge and very noisy, despite those two attributes it is often very hard to find!

The Rufous-tailed Bush Robin often turns up in early May, this one arrived on the 30th April this year 2025

a typical grassy bank covered in wild flowers

another of my favourites; the Collared Flycatcher, seen most years - photograhed 2025

large numbers of the stunning Black-headed Bunting arrive in late April. The males arrive first and establish a breeding territory, you can hear them singing all day long.

European Bee-eaters roam the island in gangs and establish nesting colonies, they breed in the banks of the rivers

despite the massive decline in breeding pairs in western Europe you can still find reasonable numbers of them passing through Lesvos.

Ruppell's Warbler breeding pairs have fallen dramtically in recent times. There are still pockets of them to be found, this one was photgraphed not far from the airport in 2025.
