An afternoon walk along local; lanes to Barwick House and Lake

WEATHER; below zero temperatures all day, but dry with some sunshine and no wind. Temp -2C

An afternoon walk in the Stoford area with Dawn, produced some very nice sightings. From the garden we saw a large flock of Redwings as they dropped into the distant trees and the usual activity around our feeders included Great Spotted Woodpecker, Nuthatch, Blue, Great & Coal Tits, Robin, Chaffinch and Dunnock.

Redwings

Along the lane to Barwick House we got to see at least 100 Redwings feeding in the meadows with a dozen Fieldfares flying over. We also saw Goldfinch, Pied Wagtails, Rooks, Crows, Jackdaws and Collared Doves.

Barwick Lake this afternoon

At Barwick House we scanned the lake and found Moorhen, Little Grebe and Mallard. Three Ravens flew over cronking as we made our way back. Then our main target bird, the Green Woodpecker, flew out of a tree just ahead of us and flew back towards Barwick House.

The woodpecker was number 157 on my year list, I know it is going to get difficult to see many more species until summer migrants start to return, but another 20 before the end of the month is feasible. What this space.
