Peak migration time in Southern Spain is nearly upon us, very soon thousands upon thousands of kites, eagles, buzzards, harriers, storks and vultures will be making their way to Africa. Come and join us to see this fantastic avian spectacle................................

THE 2015 Autumn migration is officially underway: over 5000 Black Kites passed over our village in southern Spain in the last few days (August 5th - 11th), hundreds of Bee-eaters, Pallid, Common and Alpine Swifts are forming large flocks in preparation for their return to Africa.  Whilst shrikes, warblers, nightingales, golden orioles, hoopoes, rollers, swallows, martins, wagtails and pipits are gathering and feeding up to gain weight for their epic journeys.

THE STRAIT OF GIBRALTAR AND THE MOROCCAN RIF MOUNTAINS AS SEEN FROM THE 'MIRADOR DE ESTRECHO' (VIEW POINT OF THE STRAIT) NEAR TARIFA. THE GIBRALTAR STRAIT IS A MERE 9 MILES (14 KILOMETERS) ACROSS.

During September all along the coast Black Kites are joined by Short-toed and Booted Eagles, Honey Buzzards, Marsh, Montagu's and Hen Harriers, Griffon and Egyptian Vultures, both Black and White Storks, Hobby's, Lesser Kestrels and Eurasian Sparrowhawks. These migrant birds can be seen in their thousands as they gather around Tarifa for their flight across the Strait of Gibraltar.

                                A 'KETTLE' OF GRIFFON VULTURES

The costal salt marshes and beach lagoons fill with migration waders, gulls and terns whilst inland marshes host herons, ibis, egrets and bitterns. Salt Pans at San Lucar hold up to 40 species and may include a rare wader, phalarope, tern or gull.

Why not enjoy this autumn spectacle, come and join me and a small group of birders to witness one of the greatest shows on earth!!
