Dalmatian Pelicans, Griffon Vultures, Golden Eagle and Grey Wolves

Dates: February 1-8 th, 2018

These are some of the key species that we shall be aiming at during this 8 days photography trip in Bulgaria and Northern Greece.

As a beginning we shall start from the Eastern Rhodope where we shall sit in hides aiming at Griffon Vultures, Golden Eagle and hopefully Grey Wolves. The birds regularly come to feed in front of our photography hides.

February is the time when Dalmatian Pelicans are in their superb breeding plumage. We shall aim at photographing these majestic birds at lake Kerkini in Northern Greece. The birds come very close so you might want to use wide angle or even fish eye lens for artistic shots. Depending on the water level we may take a boat and approach the feeding Greater Flamingoes and Pygmy Cormorants which are also present and can be photographed.

Day 1

Arrival in Sofia and transfer to the Eastern Rhodopes. It will be a traveling day which will take most of the time and there will be no photography opportunities.

Day 2, 3 and 4

These three days we shall be sitting in hides trying to photograph Griffon Vultures and Golden Eagle at their feeding grounds. Other than them, Grey wolf is also a casual visitor to the bait.

Day 4

In the late afternoon, we shall leave the Vulture area and depart to lake Kerkini. We shall stop for the night half way to the lake to break up the journey.

Day 5

By lunch time, we should be at the lake and spend the rest of the day taking pictures.

Day 6 and 7

Pelican photography. We shall spend these two days attempting to photograph the Dalmatian Pelican. Often White Pelicans are also present. You are welcome to spend as much time as you like with the object and experiment ideas you may have. Beginner photographers will be given guidance. Upon agreement we can try for other species such as Pygmy Cormorant and Greater Flamingoes which overwinter on the lake.
